Before His crucifixion, Jesus was betrayed and arrested in a garden. When a detachment of soldiers came to find Him, Jesus didn’t run or hide. Instead, He stepped forward and asked, “Who is it you want?” When they replied, “Jesus of Nazareth,” He answered, “I am he”—and the entire group of soldiers fell to the ground.
These were not just a handful of men—this was a well-armed group, possibly around 200 Roman soldiers. So why did they fall?
Many believe that in that moment, the divine power and authority of Jesus broke through. Just His words—“I am He”—revealed the truth of who He is: the Son of God. Even those who came to arrest Him could not stand before that kind of power.
It’s a powerful reminder:
Jesus wasn’t a helpless victim.
He was fully in control.
This wasn’t an accident.
It was the plan.
And behind that plan was a mission:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…” (John 3:16)
God’s plan was always to rescue us. Jesus came willingly to give His life, to save us from the consequences of our sin, and to set us free.
