Let’s take a closer look at what agape love looks like, one trait at a time:
1. Love is patient.
Patience is choosing not to react in anger or frustration when people let us down. It means giving others the same space to grow and make mistakes that God gives us. We all mess up—and love gives others room to learn.
2. Love is kind.
Kindness shows up in simple ways: forgiving, encouraging, helping, or speaking gently. Even when others don’t return our kindness, we’re called to keep showing it. Love isn’t just nice—it’s intentionally good.
3. Love is not jealous or boastful.
Jealousy can creep in when we compare ourselves to others—what they have, how they’re treated, or what they’ve achieved. Boasting tries to put ourselves above others. Love chooses to celebrate others, not compete with them.
4. Love is not arrogant or rude.
True love is humble. It doesn’t put others down to feel more important. Even if we don’t say it out loud, pride in our hearts can be just as damaging. Love lifts others up—it never tears down.
5. Love does not insist on its own way.
Love isn’t controlling. It listens. It respects others. If you find yourself always needing to have things your way, take a step back. Love values others’ perspectives and makes room for their voices, too.
6. Love is not irritable or resentful.
Love doesn’t fly off the handle when things go wrong. It doesn’t hold grudges or keep score. It is not easily annoyed. God forgives us completely—and real love offers that same kind of forgiveness to others.
7. Love does not rejoice at wrongdoing.
Love doesn’t find satisfaction in gossip, revenge, or bringing up someone’s past. Instead, love rejoices in healing, growth, and truth. It hopes for redemption in others, not their failure.
8. Love rejoices with the truth.
When someone walks away from sin or starts following Jesus more closely, love celebrates. When truth is spoken, even when it’s hard, love says, “Yes, that’s good.”
9. Love bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things.
Love carries the burdens of others. It gives people the benefit of the doubt. It hopes in God’s promises and stays faithful even when life is painful. This is the kind of love Jesus showed us on the cross—and it’s the kind of love He calls us to give.
